后来,我终于了解到朝鲜大使馆的Windspeed( xingrufeng )North居然有一个。

2008 Meng Niu Green Cycling Event
In spring 2008 there was a event that had groups cycling from each and every city that was hosting some competitions during the upcoming Olympics. It was sponsored by Beijing TV and Meng Niu milk company. I was selected to ride from Qinhuangdao to Beijing. I would have loved to ride from Shanghai to Beijing but I was working in a multinational company and could not stay away from work so long. For each city they chose 2 people from Beijing to go there and then meet up with 8 locals and cycle back together to Beijing.
Against their recommendations I chose to ride my fixed gear bike. I was a little bit worried as I did not know how the route would be if there would be any mountains on the way. I wanted to take 2 different sized cogs but I did not have a locking tool nor a cog wrench. I went to various high end bike shops in Beijing but most of them did not have any cog or locking tools. Windspeed (xingrufeng) north of the North Korean embassy actually had one. But I wanted to take it along so I could change the gear along the way. At that time the fixed gear bike I had, had a rear hub with a a fixed and a freewheel side. Since that most of my bikes have both sides fixed so I can always have 2 different gears installed.
So for this event the different groups all headed out on different days as we were scheduled to arrive back in Beijing all on the same day. As our route was the shortest we set out as the last group. It was unclear if we should ride it in 2 or 3 days. I was for 2 days and so was the cycling association ex-professional cyclist and ex-team road bike coach Sun Zhan Bo who had come with me from Beijing. We were a mixed group of mainly men, from young to old and mainly on mountain bikes. Actually most of the cyclists on my group had started cycling less than 12 months ago. It was most people's first time to cycle that far.
The day we were to set out from Qinhuangdao there was a ceremony on a big city square with speeches and performances, including my trick bike to convey the message of cycling as a green form of transportation and a good sport to keep in shape.
As often when I cycle I had my big SLR camera dangling around my neck while cycling so that I could take shots along the way. In the beginning everybody was worried that I could not make it as they saw I am female, riding a strange bike with no gears and with the camera and a small backpack with water and nuts and raisins inside. But they did not know me.
We were all wearing the green cycling event cycling kit. When we were cycling along people driving past did slow down and have a look what it was all about. We also had TV camera teams follow us for the whole ride.
The "coach" was a great help to make sure everybody was aware of safety and how to cycling in a group in traffic also on some national roads with many trucks. Most of the time, he and I were cycling in the front of the team to pull the rest of the group. We did an amazing 175km on the first day. That was more than half of the distance so we knew we can make it in 2 days.
For me it turned out great to be riding my fixed gear bike with the gear ratio 48-13. The whole route was flat and most of the roads were paved. Just some sections we were cycling on gravel roads. We were often cycling at a constant speed. Riding fixed gear is perfect for that, especially when the gear ratio suits the cyclist's cadence. The perfect circular mother legs need to do is very meditative. No coasting possible. It is like ramming a marathon, if you run it your speed you get in an ecstatic state and could actually run for more than 42km. I could have continued to cycle.
On the second day our average speed was slower as some people were sore form the first day. But it was an easy flat ride into Beijing where a big gathering of all 5 groups with an opulent dinner party. The next day there was a ceremony at Desehengmen.
Everybody had a great time. If you get the chance, try joining a cycling event to promote green cycling. It is a lot of fun and each event has some impact!
